In addition to artistic inspiration, his marriages have also given Henri the opportunity to demystify Vodou for his community through his work as a professor. Henri regularly teaches a module on Vodou in his sociology classes, seeking to debunk common misconceptions about Vodou. Henri claimed that he has his work cut out for him, as many of his students grew up in the Baptist Church and often come to class with preconceived ideas about Vodou as demonic and evil. These views are largely shaped by television shows like American Horror Story, a popular horror show that sensationalized New Orleans Voodoo and magic. Nonetheless, Henri’s position as artist and teacher gives him a unique platform to reach audiences that would not normally be exposed to Vodou or its practices.

I asked Henri if there is anything that he asks of his Loa wives. He quipped that he probably asks too much of them, particularly after Hurricane Katrina.
